New Year

A new year, a new beginning. At least that's what we like to think. I'm sure I'm not the only one who, by the end of the year, begins to think about where I went wrong, and how I can do things better "next time." Somehow I get the idea that, because I find myself lacking in one area, I can let everything slide and just start anew at step one. I think that way because it's easy. The First. January. The start of a brand new year. A day where we have all decided in the days leading up to this, what is best for us. We've made ourselves resolutions, and we plan to act on them. We plan to become better people, we plan to achieve goals, and we plan for everything to work out. What we don't plan on is the fact that one year from now, we'll be doing it all over again.

Perhaps that is not the case for some. People achieve, goals are reached, and all is well. Judging by the reaction I see most people have to the coming New Year, they feel they have let themselves down at some point and hope that this time things will be different. I'd like to think that I could live my life without regret, but I can't. There are always so many things I want to do and so many things not to do, that life becomes overwhelming. I understand that I live a good life, with friends and family who support me, a girlfriend who puts up with me in those times where I feel I could not even put up with myself, and a job to keep a roof over my head, plus enough extra cash to keep my hobbies going. Everything is great, but this is not a post to gloat. I am thankful for everyone and everything in my life, despite how lowly I may feel about myself for not achieving my personal goals.

It's just, sometimes I feel like I don't deserve all this. But when pieces of my world begin to break, you can be damn sure I'm there to fix it. I act fast, I make sacrifices. So then why, when my world is calm, do I not push myself to make these same sacrifices? Is it laziness? Probably. Yes, even. I become too comfortable. Being comfortable is great in the sense that you can just go with the flow regarding anything that comes your way. It becomes a nuisance when you want to do yourself better, but don't have the drive for it.
As an artist, I need to always broaden my horizon. I need to go places, I need to experience things, I need to live life. It's how I become inspired, and it's how I feel better about myself. But I just don't do it enough, and it's because I've become too comfortable with my life. It's that feeling in your soul that yearns for more, but your mind and body reply with "next time." How many times is it going to take until you can get things done? For me? Many. Many days, many months, many years. This isn't all about art either, this is regarding how I feel about myself and if I believe myself to be someone worth looking up to.

It's time I worked harder. Both on my art and myself. As an artist, there is always room to improve, and I aim to do just that. It's not about finding time, it's about making time. I have funds, I live in the city, I am surrounded by artists! I have no excuse to skip out on something that can make me a better artist. I want to be motivated and inspired and create great things using my knowledge, skill and imagination. I want to be a better person, one who is excited to get up in the morning, and have everything I need planned out the night before. I want to be organized, I want to be ready, I want to be energized and I want to make it into the gym on a regular basis. I want to feel better about myself physically and personally. I want to be someone worth looking up to.

The new year is approaching, and I've begun to think about where I went wrong, and how I can do things better "next time." If this truly is my "next time," I don't want a reset button by the end of the year. I want to continue and create my goals whenever I need to. All of this can't be accomplished overnight. It takes time and dedication. Small steps and small accomplishments. I want to be patient, I want to accomplish my goals, I want to believe I can do what I set out to do.

But most of all, I don't want to be comfortable.

Best of luck to everyone.
Happy New Year.

Late night sketch

Spent the evening collecting art for my reference and inspiration folders. Then proceeded to do some sketching because I was motivated and because I had a couple cups of coffee with my dinner and what is sleep? Enjoy :)

Leyendecker

Lisa got this book for me today. I've been wanting a Leyendecker book for some time now because his work is of some of the few classics that really speak to me. I'd like to study the way he approached his paintings and in the process bring some experimenting with his style into my own art. I just really love how he does both sharp and smooth strokes, which oddly enough speaks to me as being static, but not stiff nor lifeless. His paintings are very much alive and express a lot through movement, style, and technique. One thing that really fascinates me is his use of shading, where he'll use a thick brush to lay down parallel strokes, but just do enough and in the right length and direction, that it doesn't look too busy or wrong. They just fit with everything else and actually help give life to the piece. I'm excited to jump in and see what I learn.

More Leyendecker art can be found here.

Tychus for GOSU

Here's another rough for GOSU. Tychus Findlay from Star Craft 2. Though it's not from start to finish, you can watch some of the process video here. (WIP)

Drawing robotics is always a challenge for me, so it's good to do these every once in awhile. It really puts me into a different mode of concentration because essentially I'm 3D modeling in my head and making sure I know the shape, dimensions, and detail to each hard surface piece. It's a lot different from drawing organic since it's harder to find times when I can lay down active or living curves like I do when drawing the human figure. If that makes sense.

Teemo for GOSU

I did some live drawing tonight. It's a lot of me being really bad at drawing cute cuddly creatures.. so warm up took a lot of time and a lot of bad drawings. (Skip to 40 minutes in for the good stuff!) Anyway, if you're not familiar, it's the character Teemo from League of Legends. One of the drawings for the prints I'm helping with for GOSU.

Still a few more things I wanna tweak before I start the clean inking :)

I want to go to there

Last night I was watching PBS and they were doing a special on the best sites to see in Canada. I don't know of too many awesome places in Canada, other than the Thousand Islands, which I guess we own half of, but still.. REALLY want to go there... BUT, what really caught my attention, despite all the crazy awesome beaches, towns, etc, was Habitat 67. Look at this place and tell me you don't want to live there.

These are apartments, apparently. I've seen some crazy living spaces from all corners of the world, which I thought were interesting, but never pictured myself living there and enjoying it. This, however... I just really think it would be awesome. It's visually appealing on it's own, and I'm sure it presents even better eye candy throughout the day, all days of the year. Those cast shadows, those colors.. I don't usually go crazy for architecture, especially those insanely designed, but this.. this is brilliant.

On a whole, last nights program made me want to explore Canada. Hell, I'd just like to explore, period. Go traveling or something... The farthest I've traveled in the states was Texas. It just seems like maybe I should go traveling the rest of the country before I start country hopping. At least visit the east coast...

A vacation far far away sure does sound nice.

Spookyness

I went to play board games at a friend's place today and in the background we had the Silent Hill movie playing. It's been awhile since I've seen it, and I still really like it and still think it's one of the better video game to movie adaptations around. Well, that, along with reading some creepy stories tonight, were the inspiration for this. Very appropriate with Halloween coming up in a couple days :)

Being a toy collector

You know when you're a toy collector and you like to hang up your "trophies" on the wall to display all their glory, but then suddenly you run out of room and have to decide what to box away and what to keep out? Oh.. you don't? N-neither do I... heh..

ANYWAY

Big changes to my website. Finally transitioning from blog to actual portfolio. Go me.

Gosu!

My friend, Aaron Oak, is running a project on indiegogo for an eSports lounge called Gosu in Seattle. It's a great idea, and with Seattle's gaming community as big as it is, I think it's much needed. I'm helping Aaron with the rewards, and will be drawing characters from a few of the games which will be playable at Gosu. If you contribute $100 or more to the project you'll get a print of one of the characters :). There are also many other cool goodies you can get by supporting the project, so if you're in the Seattle area and think this would be awesome, please help Aaron out. Or spread the word and get other residents of Seattle aware of the project!

Catan World

Ha, as I said before, I'm terrible at updating this... my company, Massively Fun, has been working on a brand new Catan MMO that runs in HTML5. More info here: http://www.geekwire.com/2012/massively-fun-sets-sail-settlers-catan-game/
Once I am allowed to do so, I will post higher res images of my concepts and in-game art. You can also sign up to be a beta tester at http://catanworld.goko.com Also, I have been at PAX this weekend, and plan to write about a few cool things that's happened there, so come back in a couple days :)

May, June, July drawings

It's been awhile, which means I have a few things to post. I feel bad for neglecting my blog, but since I usually post my art on either Facebook or Twitter, the blog kinda takes a backseat.. I should probably update my Tumblr as well.. haha. Welp, art dump time.
Some loose sketching. I really like how this came out.
I forgot how long I spent on this... maybe 3 hours-ish? Probably one of my favorite portrait paintings I've done. I really like how this came out. Done from reference.
Some characters from a short animation assignment I did in school. I've been playing around with the idea of making comic strips with these guys for awhile.
More characters from the same story as above.
Drew this for my girlfriend because she loves Green Arrow :)
Took a stab at some environment painting. 3 hours from reference.
From reference, 2 hours.
From reference, 40 minutes
From reference, 2.5 hours. Hoping to finish it someday...
Team Avatar from The Legend of Korra. Drew this mid-way through the series and had planned on coloring it... Do I ever finish anything? Oy... Thanks for stopping by.
